CF Westman announces first ever business incubator in Brandon
On October 22, sixty-five current and potential home based business owners and economic development practitioners attended CF Westman's Home Based Business Conference. A panel of four business professionals provided information and answers to various questions on the topics of networking, marketing, retailing, and managing family and work in the home. Al Vickers discussed what every home based business owner should know about taxes. A financial panel discussed financial aspects of starting and running a home based business and finally Derek Cullens discussed legal considerations. The conference was a huge success!
Community Futures Westman is involved with a community economic development partnership between organizations in Bolivia and Canada. In Canada the partnership includes CF Westman, Canadian Crossroads International and the Marquis Project with funding for the project provided by The Canadian International Development Agency. In Bolivia our partners are la Programa de Estudios y Estudios y Apoyo a la Produccion/Fondo de Credito Solidario and la Asociacion National Ecumenica de Desarrollo.
The goals of the project are to assess whether opportunities for expansion into the Canadian fair trade market exist and to prepare Bolivian quinoa and coffee farmers to access the Canadian fair trade markets. One of the components of this project has been having both a Bolivian project coordinator and a Canadian fair trade coordinator work together in Bolivia. They have performed research on new market opportunities as well as on logistical considerations of exporting to Canada for the past six months. A placement from Bolivia, Jaime Andrade, is working out of the CF Westman office now to study Canadian markets first hand for the next two months. We see the Westman region as a potential starting point for importing and distributing these fair trade products.
